Mumbai: Doctor tries to sell baby for Rs 5 lakh in Virar, arrested after cops lay trap

The city police have arrested a 48-year-old doctor and three others for allegedly attempting to sell a baby in Virar area of Mumbai in Maharashtra on Wednesday. After a tip-off, the police set up a trap near state transport bus depot in Virar (east) and arrested the accused with the 8-month-old baby girl. The doctor has been identified as Jiten Bala, who resides in Nilemore in Nalasopara. The accused couple trying to purchase the baby has been identified as Sonjit Mondal (40) and Manju (37), a resident of Narangi village, according to a report.
The baby has been rescued and sent to child shelter. During questioning, the couple reportedly confessed to police that the baby was handed over to them by the doctor. Police have also arrested another woman identified as 50-year-old Anita Bhave who allegedly helped the doctor to get the baby and sell it for Rs 5 lakh. Cops say they are probing whether the doctor was trying to sell the baby to an agent or directly to a childless couple.
