Daughter and damad: How Sitharaman hit back at Rahul's 'Hum Do, Hamare Do' jibe

13-02-2021

Day after Rahul Gandhi said in the Lok Sabha that the country is being run by only four people with a 'Hum Do, Hamare Do' approach, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman returned the remark back to the Congress leader with a dig on "daughter and damad" of the Gandhi family. Replying to debate on the Union Budget in Lok Sabha, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said, "Hum Do, Hamare Do is that - we are two people taking care of the party and there are two others who I have to take care of - daughter and damad... We don't do that." Participating in the general discussion on the Union Budget in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi invoked the popular family planning slogan 'Hum Do, Hamare Do' and attacked the Modi government, saying just four people are running the country. "Now four people are running the country...and everyone knows who they are," Rahul Gandhi said. Hitting back at the Opposition criticism, Nirmala Sitharaman went on to say that Rs 10,000 has been given to 50 lakh street traders as working capital for one year. "They aren't anyone's cronies," Nirmala Sitharaman said. Further taking a dig at the Congress and in an apparent jibe at "damad" Robert Vadra, Nirmala Sitharaman said, "PM SVANidhi Yojana, for those who are constantly accusing us of dealing with cronies - SVANidhi doesn't go to cronies." "Damads [son-in-laws] get land in states which are governed by some parties - Rajasthan, Haryana once upon a time," Nirmala Sitharaman said.
Nirmala Sitharaman also said the Union Budget 2021-122 has set the pace for India to become Aatmanirbhar. "The reforms undertaken will lay the path for India to become one of those fastest-growing economies in the world, she said, adding the Budget has set the pace for India to become Aatmanirbhar or self-reliant," Nirmala Sitharaman said.
