An unnoticed daily habit, sleep is one activity of the body that plays a vital role in our lives. Many physical and mental health conditions are associated with sleep, which accounts for around a quarter of our lifetime. In the early 1950s, sleep was perceived as a passive activity. However, more studies have shown that even though the body is lying dormant, the brain is highly active during this time. To understand the human sleep mechanism, one has to take a deep dive into the role of circadian rhythm, which is regulated by our biological clock. This circadian rhythm, housed in the brain, is known as the suprachiasmatic nucleus site (SCN). This provides day-night signals to the brain and body. According to Dr YongChiat Wong, Group Scientist, who handles the Medical and Technical Affairs of P&G Health from Asia Pacific, India, Middle East, and Africa regions, for the proper functioning of the body, a person should focus on getting quality sleep rather than the number of hours of sleep. In fact, a person could be in bed for 10 hours at night but may not get quality sleep.
