World number one Iga Swiatek stormed into the third round of the Australian Open 2023 after defeating Camila Osorio in straight sets on Wednesday. In a battle between two 21-year-olds, Swiatek prevailed 6-2, 6-3 over the 84th-ranked Osorio under the closed roof in just one hour and 24 minutes in Rod Laver Arena. Along with the win, Swiatek clinched her 12th straight second-round win at Grand Slams. Poland's Swiatek will face either former US Open winner Bianca Andreescu or Cristina Bucsa of Spain in the next round. I think it was much tougher than the score says, Swiatek said in her on-court interview. “It was really intense physically. She (Osorio) didn’t give me many points for free. It was tough but I am happy that I was consistent in being proactive. I’m pretty happy that I won and can play the next round. Osorio tried to hang in with Swiatek with her extended rallies and ability to change the direction of the ball in close games. Colombia's Osorio even broke the world number one thrice, including when Swiatek served for the match at 6-2, 5-1. However, Swiatek used her power prowess to eventually overcome Osorio. The top seed used her forehand, with 13 rally winners. She also won 64 percent of points returning Osorio's first serve. Swiatek has now won 53 of her first 65 main-draw Grand Slam singles matches. Only six players had more such wins after their first 65 matches in majors in the Open Era: Margaret Court (61), Monica Seles (60), Chris Evert (57), Martina Hingis (56), Billie Jean King (56) and Tracy Austin (54).
