Twitter's iconic blue bird logo, which has been the platform's symbol for more than a decade, will be replaced with an "X" logo, Elon Musk announced Sunday. "X.com is now linked to Twitter.com. Temporary X logo to be released later today," Musk tweeted.
Musk has repeatedly expressed his ambition to create a "one-stop-shop" app that combines the functionality of social media and payment apps like WeChat, owned by Chinese tech giant Tencent.
WeChat is an integral part of Chinese society? Over 1 billion users use the service for various tasks, from social media and messaging to ordering food and paying taxi fares. It's so essential to our daily lives that it's sometimes called the "app for everything".
Musk has previously said that last year's controversial acquisition of Twitter was "spurring the development of X, the all-things app."
SpaceX and Tesla CEOs' fascination with the letter X dates back to the 1990s. But why is the 52-year-old so obsessed with the 24th letter of the English alphabet?
In 1999, Mr. Musk launched his PayPal predecessor, the online banking services platform Domain X.com. In 2017, Musk bought back the X.com domain and kept it among his idle assets until Sunday when he announced Twitter's future.
After the acquisition, Musk tweeted that the domain held great "sentimental value" for him and perhaps reminded him of his early entrepreneurial days.
