A common problem is the development of cholesteatomas, which are abnormal clusters of cells in the ears that can cause dizziness, facial paralysis, hearing loss, and even bone erosion if disturbed. In a study recently published in the journal Nature Communications, researchers from Osaka University revealed the cause of cholesteatoma, which may help develop new treatments for patients suffering from the disease.
Cholesteatomas consist of cysts or pits in the ear that are composed of skin, collagen fibers, skin cells, fibroblasts, keratin, and dead tissue.
