The Congress on Saturday accused the government of hiding or demolishing slums and hoarding stray animals ahead of the G20 summit, with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi saying there was "no need to hide the reality of India from our guests".

The Congress shared a video on X, formerly Twitter, showing the covering of some slum areas with green sheets ahead of the two-day summit, which began here on Saturday and was attended.
"The Indian government is hiding poor people and animals. There is no need to hide the reality of India from our guests," Gandhi, who is currently abroad, said in a message to X.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh also attacked the prime minister.

"The G20 aims to be a productive meeting of the world's largest economies, whose goal is to tackle global problems in cooperation. President Putin may have stayed away, but Prince Potem was also in slums that were boarded up or demolished, leaving thousands homeless. Stray animals were cruelly rounded up and abused, tarnishing the prime minister's image, Ramesh said in a statement.
In addition to the video covering the slum, the opposition party shared videos about stray dogs and animal cruelty ahead of the G20 summit.
"The government considers us insects. We are not human beings," said a slum dweller whose video was shared by Congress.

“Ahead of the G20, the Modi government covered their houses with curtains to hide their failures. Because the king hates the poor,” said the opposition party on its X handle.

"Dogs are dragged by the neck, beaten with sticks and thrown into cages. They are denied food and water and are in extreme stress and fear," it said.

"It is imperative that we raise our voices against such heinous acts and demand justice for these voiceless victims," the opposition party said.
