On Tuesday, the Supreme Court ordered the Ministry of Interior to prepare a comprehensive manual on police briefings in criminal cases, as police briefings should not lead to a media trial. DGs were also invited to submit their proposals for the handbook.
Observing that biased reporting creates public suspicion that a person has committed a crime, a bench headed by Justice DY Chandrachud of the Supreme Court said that media reports can also violate the privacy of the victim.

At the same time, the Supreme Court ordered the general boards of all states to submit proposals to the MHA within a month for the preparation of guidelines for police briefings in criminal cases.
"All DGPs should inform the home ministry about their suggestions as guidelines within a month...NHRC suggestions can also be considered," the board said. In the press conferences where the investigation continues, the Supreme Court discussed the statement about the procedures followed by the police. (with PTI revenue)
