Punjab police busted a major prison-based drug cartel, arrested seven alleged drug smugglers, and recovered 15 kilograms of heroin from them, an official said on Saturday.
Mastermind Jaspreet Singh alias Kali Mogast, who is currently in Faridkot jail, was in touch with Pakistan-based drug smugglers and ran the cartel from jail, said Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav.

Police said the arrested persons are Gurpinder Singh alias Bhinda, Narinder Singh and Ranjodh Singh alias Jodha - residents of Haruwal village in Gurdaspur - and Rajdeep Singh, Ram Singh, Jaspal Singh and Rajwinder Kaur, residents of Ferozepur.

The consignment was expected to be delivered to someone in Amritsar, the DGP added. Acting on information, a counter-intelligence operation team arrested the trio from Gurdaspur's Haruwal area and seized 15 kg of heroin from their possession, Yadav said.
He added that a total of 7 million rubles in cash and two cars were recovered from them.

The consignment was brought across the Indo-Pak border in six batches, each containing a 2.5 kg packet of heroin, he added.
"Investigations revealed that Moga mastermind Jaspreet Singh alias Kali, who is currently in Faridkot jail, was in touch with Pakistan-based drug smugglers through WhatsApp and controlled this drug cartel from jail," the DGP said, adding. the police will soon bring him for further investigation.
According to the police, one of the accused, Gurpinder, revealed during interrogation that Jaspreet had to send someone from a parking lot near Amritsar City Hall to pick up a batch of heroin.
