June 2, 2025: On Monday, June 2, 2025, Mehbooba Mufti, the president of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), called for the dignified return and rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits, stating that their reintegration should not be seen as a mere symbolic return but rather as a chance to create a future for Jammu and Kashmir that is inclusive, forward-thinking, and shared.
In order to enable "real progress" on the front, the former chief minister presented a "comprehensive and phased roadmap" to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha of Jammu and Kashmir during a visit to the Raj Bhavan in Srinagar.
Copies of the plan were also delivered by the PDP leader to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
"This problem reaches deep into our communal conscience and transcends politics. Making sure that our Pandit brothers and sisters, who were sadly uprooted from their motherland, have the chance to return in a way that is respectable, safe, and sustainable is both a moral obligation and a social duty, Ms. Mufti stated in the letter.
Every political party in the Union Territory, regardless of ideology, has continuously backed the concept of their return, according to Ms. Mufti.
"We all share the agony of their relocation and the desire for peace, which unites us in the hope that Kashmir can once again be a place where people live in harmony with one another. An inclusive and phased roadmap has been included for your consideration in order to enable significant progress on this front," she stated.
According to the PDP president, the proposal places a strong emphasis on an all-stakeholders approach, guaranteeing that any proposed policy or strategy is grounded in mutual trust, empathy, and—above all—the reality on the ground.
"I implore your office to start a dialogue-driven approach with local leaders, civil society, community groups, and pertinent administrative institutions. In the letter to the L.G., she also stated, "We can only design a future where no community feels alienated in their own territory by inclusive deliberations."
