June 30, 2025: The pharma plant explosion in this district on Monday claimed the lives of 12, according to Telangana minister Damodara Raja Narasimha. According to the health minister, the explosion, which was probably caused by a chemical reaction, injured at least 34 people. "As many as 12 people died and 34 are under treatment," the minister told reporters.
Labour Minister G Vivek Venkatswamy said: "Eight people died in the morning. Four bodies were now discovered. Both the ministers visited the site.
Because of a possible chemical reaction, an explosion occurred at a reactor in the Sigachi pharma plant in the Pashamylaram industrial estate, where a fire also broke out. Earlier, Inspector General of Police (Multizone) V Satyanarayana, quoting factory sources, said there were 150 people in the factory at the time of the blast. Ninety people were in the same area where the explosion occurred.
He said the explosion occurred between 9.28 am and 9.35 am. The management immediately reached out to the local police who alerted the fire department.
About 10 fire-fighting engines were pressed into service, he said, adding the personnel of NDRF and SDRF were also engaged in the rescue operation.
The fire was brought under control, he added.
Asked how many workers were working at the time of the tragedy, he said effort was on to ascertain the exact figure as the person who maintains record of the workers' details is believed to have died.
PM Modi offered his condolences to those whose loved ones were killed in the fire and expressed his grief over the tragedy. He wished an early recovery to the injured.
He announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 50,000 to the injured and Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund in a post on "X." An official release stated that Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy expressed his grief over the incident and directed officials to take all necessary measures to rescue the trapped workers and provide them with advanced medical care. According to the website of the company, Sigachi Industries Limited is a pharmaceutical company devoted to leading the way in the development of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs), Intermediates, Excipients, vitamin-mineral blends, and Operations and Management services. There was no immediate reaction from the company.
