Aug 20, 2025: Kavinder Gupta, the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, met with Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar today in New Delhi to talk about important projects for the Union Territory's development.
According to a statement, the LG told the Union Minister about two major water supply projects that would provide Leh and Kargil with continuous drinking water. The State High Powered Steering Committee of Ladakh and the 12th Apex Committee under AMRUT 2.0 both approved the projects, which cost Rs 334.72 crores and Rs 373.17 crores, earlier this year. A total of Rs. 62 crores in central assistance has been approved, with Rs. 31 crores allocated to each project. The UT Administration will be responsible for the remaining funds. Gupta emphasized that Ladakh is in the midst of a severe groundwater crisis, with alarming levels of depletion posing dangers to future generations.
He stated that these projects are an essential step toward addressing the region's water security and sustainability. Ladakh has received Rs 128 crores in a funding ratio of 90:10 under AMRUT 2.0. The first tranche of Rs 58.5 crores and the second tranche of Rs 69.5 crores have already been distributed to support the projects. Under PMAY-U 2.0, the LG also increased the demand for an urban housing project and emphasized the need to expand the housing infrastructure in Leh and Kargil to accommodate an expanding population. He went on to talk about the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy's Pang-Kharnak project and other power-related initiatives, urging prompt action to ensure their quick completion. Gupta said these projects are in line with the Prime Minister’s vision of making Ladakh a carbon-neutral region and a hub of sustainable energy.
The Union Minister appreciated the efforts of the Ladakh Administration and assured continued central support for the region’s development.
The LG reaffirmed that the administration will ensure fast and effective implementation of the projects to strengthen Ladakh’s water, housing, and energy sectors.
