Aug 22, 2025: The Punjabi entertainment and academic communities are reeling from the sudden demise of legendary comedian and educator Jaswinder Bhalla, who passed away early this morning at Fortis Hospital, Mohali.
Known for his iconic comic roles and sharp satire, Bhalla was also a respected professor at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana.
According to hospital sources and confirmation by Dr TS Riar, Additional Director of Communication at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Bhalla had been unwell for some time and was receiving medical care prior to his death.
A Dual Legacy:
Comedy and Education Bhalla’s artistic journey began in 1988 with the satirical series Chhankata, where his portrayal of Chacha Chatar Singh became a cultural phenomenon. He later starred in Punjabi cinema classics like “Carry On Jatta”, “Chak De Phatte”, and “Daddy Cool Munde Fool”, earning admiration across generations. But his contributions extended far beyond the screen. Bhalla's academic rigor and creative spirit as a professor and Head of the Department of Extension Education at PAU inspired numerous students. Despite his retirement in 2020, he remained a popular figure on campus. The news of his passing has deeply affected his former students, many of whom credit him with shaping their academic and personal journeys. Bhalla had once expressed regret that he retired during the pandemic without a proper farewell from his students—a moment he said would remain a lifelong sorrow.
Today, those very students are mourning the loss of a mentor who taught them not just agriculture but life through laughter and wisdom. Bhalla earned his B.Sc (Honors) in Agriculture and M.Sc in Extension Education from PAU and completed his Ph.D from CCS University, Meerut. Before joining PAU in 1989, he served in the Punjab Agriculture Department for five years. He was a distinct voice in Punjabi culture because he was able to combine humor with social commentary. Whether on stage, in classrooms, or on screen, Jaswinder Bhalla left an indelible mark that will be cherished for generations. Although his passing marks the end of an era, his legacy will continue to be one of love, laughter, and learning.
