Expressing disappointment over the Army chief's remarks, CPI(M) leader M Y Tarigami today said efforts were needed to reach out to people of Kashmir rather than widening the gulf between them and rest of the country.

"At a time when efforts are needed for reaching out to people, such statements are bound to widen the gulf between people of the Valley and the rest of the country," Tarigami said in a statement here.

The legislator from south Kashmir's Kulgam said such harsh statements could compound the already hostile situation in the Valley and prove counter-productive.

Stressing that this was the time for taking confidence building measures (CBMs) as there was huge trust deficit, he said the present situation is outcome of trust deficit and reflection of accumulated anger over the decades.

Situation won't improve unless the governments both at the Centre and in the state respond to disillusionment and hopelessness in Kashmir, Tarigami said.

Terming stone pelting as an expression of disillusionment, Tarigami said they (stone pelters) want to be heard but nobody is listening.

The response to stones with guns is highly unfortunate and unacceptable, he said.
