Srinagar : National Conference president Farooq Abdullah, contestant for the bypoll to the Srinagar Lok Sabha seat, today claimed that the PDP-BJP government had failed to provide a conducive atmosphere for peaceful election after clashes erupted during polling.

“People have fought for this vote and they should be able to utilise it. Unfortunately, this government has failed to give that peaceful atmosphere to people so that they can come out and vote,” Farooq said, while reacting to the deaths during violence at Budgam polling stations.

The former CM said the deaths showed “how much the situation has deteriorated”. He said people had died in Budgam district and many were injured by pellet guns.

“We hope that the polling will take place as we go on and the people will be able to express their opinion.”

Asked about his earlier statement that stone-throwers were fighting for Kashmir resolution, Farooq said he stood by what he had said.
