Jammu : The Union Ministry of Environment has accorded environment clearance to the 540-MW Kwar hydroelectric project in J&K.

The hydel project is considered another major achievement of the Chenab Valley Power Projects (CVPP) Limited, a joint venture between the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation, J&K State Power Development Corporation and the Power Trading Corporation. It is being been established to harness the vast hydropower potential of the Chenab.

The project is designed with an estimated annual energy generation of 1,975.54 MU. “The environment clearance was issued as per the recommendations of the Expert Appraisal Committee. The environmental management plan (EMP), as approved, envisages detailed provisions for environmental safeguards. The implementation of the EMP shall be monitored by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change on a regular basis. A Multi-Disciplinary Committee will monitor the implementation of the environmental safeguards,” says a statement issued by the CVPP.
