Cops flout traffic rules in Jammu

As the common man is feeling the pinch of stricter traffic rules and hefty fines under the new Motor Vehicles Amendment Act, policemen continue to violate traffic rules in Jammu and Kashmir without any fear of getting fined.

Traffic mess in Jammu city has become a major cause of worry as the law enforcing agencies instead of streamlining vehicular movements are “mainly occupied in achieving official targets through random challenging”. With growing number of vehicles, narrow roads and apathetic attitude of the traffic police, jams have become a routine affair. The traffic police has collected Rs 15 core fine from traffic violators in Jammu and Kashmir in 2019.

On Tuesday, a cop who was driving a two wheeler on the wrong side of the road without wearing crash hamlet just a few meters away from the Civil Secretariat, Jammu, got away without penalty, while traffic cops were seen challaning a two-wheeler rider. When asked about the duel standards of traffic police, a cop on duty said, “He is on a patrol.”
