Ranjan Gogoi, 46th Chief Justice of India and held the post for a little over 13 months and headed a five-judge bench that gave the verdict on the sensitive Ayodhya land dispute on 9 November last year.

a notification issued by Home Ministry dated Monday, it was announced that President Ram Nath Kovind is nominating Gogoi to fill the vacancy originating due to the retirement of one of the nominated members.

The nominated members are usually amongst persons having special knowledge or practical experience in literature, science, art and social service.

Nearly a fifth of all Rajya Sabha seats are falling vacant and elections for them will take place on 26 March. The result, which is expected to impact the overall make of the House, will be out on the same day.
