The confirmed coronavirus cases topped 2.5 million on Tuesday as 90,175 more people contracted the infection in a single day. The death toll worldwide now stands at 177,415 and the number of recoveries at 4,155,178, according to Johns Hopkins tally. 80 per cent of the coronavirus positive cases are in Europe and the United States.

Europe, the most affected continent, has 1,230,522 official infections and 108,797 fatalities, while the United States, the country where Covid-19 is spreading most rapidly, has 824,438 active cases and 45,039 fatalities.

The US is followed by Spain (204,178), Italy (183,957), France (159,299), Germany (148,453) and the UK (130,175). The United Kingdom's coronavirus death toll on Tuesday increased by 828, taking the country's number of fatalities to 17,378.

Meanwhile, Italy's number of hospitalized coronavirus patients, including those in intensive care, has continued to decrease. There was a day-to-day-increase of 2,729 confirmed cases of Covid-19, the respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus.
