Violence over FB post in Bengaluru: 3 dead, 50 cops hurt

Bengaluru | 12-Aug-2020

The Karnataka government on Wednesday ordered a magisterial enquiry into the violent clashes that broke out in the eastern part of Bengaluru late Tuesday night, over an alleged derogatory social media post uploaded by a Congress legislators relative. At least three people and over 50 police personnel were injured. The incident took place between DJ Halli and KG Halli areas after a mob started pelting stones and torching vehicles.
After a high-level meeting with CM Yediyurappa, state Home Minister Bommai said: Losses caused for damaged property during the incident will be recovered from perpetrators identified by the police.
Confirming the deaths, Bengaluru City Police Commissioner Kamal Pant said, We have learned that three people have died during the incident. However, we are yet to ascertain the exact reason behind these deaths.
Pant said over 50 police personnel, including senior officers at the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) level, were also injured in the incident. Police jeeps, buses, and other vehicles parked in the area were torched by the mob. Stone pelting was also rampant in the area during the late hours. Two vehicles in which DCPs arrived at the site were overturned and burnt, Pant said.
Earlier, Pant said the police had identified and arrested the person behind the derogatory post. Apart from this, over 100 people were arrested for the violence. With regard to incidents in DJ Halli, accused Naveen arrested for posting derogatory posts also total 110 accused arrested for arson, stone pelting and assault on police. Appeal to all to cooperate with police to maintain peace, he tweeted.
The irate mob went violent after the police allegedly refused to take complaint against the individual, P Naveen, purportedly a relative of Congress MLA Akhanda Shrinivasa Murthy, at DJ Halli and KG Halli police stations. Soon after, the crowd gathered in front of DJ Halli police station demanding the police to take a complaint. The angry mob also gathered in front of the MLAs house and pelted stone and set ablaze vehicles.
