International Translation Day, 2020

September 29, 2020

International Translation Day is an international day celebrated every year on 30 September on the feast of St. Jerome, the Bible translator who is considered the patron saint of translators. The celebrations have been promoted by International Federation of Translators ever since it was set up in 1953.

In 1991 FIT launched the idea of an officially recognized International Translation Day to show solidarity of the worldwide translation community in an effort to promote the translation profession in different countries. This is an opportunity to display pride in a profession that is becoming increasingly essential in the era of progressing globalization.

According to UN, International Translation Day plays an important role in bringing nations together, contributing to development and strengthening world peace and security. This day provides a great opportunity to spotlight the important work of translators, interpreters and others in the language service industry.

On 24 May 2017, the General Assembly adopted a resolution 71/288 to proclaim 30th September as International Translation Day after considering the role of professionals in connecting nations and fostering peace, understanding and development.
