Over 10 Chinese companies - including BYD, CRRC Yongji Electric - seek Indian registration

September 30, 2020

10 to 15 companies with roots in China, including BYD and CRRC, have reached out to the Indian government to get registered here, after India made it mandatory for companies with beneficial ownership in countries sharing land borders with India to get registered for participating in public procurement contracts.

CRRC, a joint venture between Beijing based CRRC Yongji Electric Limited and India's Pioneer Fil Med Limited, has a registered plant in Haryana and was established in 2015.
BYD India, which has a manufacturing plant in Chennai, is looking to begin manufacturing electric cars "in the near future," not only for India but also for the overseas market, the company said in its application to DPIIT.

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade received requests from these companies earlier this month and has now reached out to ministries concerned, including railways, seeking details of the demand and supply scenario for items supplied by these Chinese companies.

"Around 10-15 applications have come and we are collecting information on them. All such applications require security clearance," a senior government official told. "The process has just started and we are getting inputs from the ministries concerned," said the official, asking not to be identified.

An order by the Department of Expenditure mandated that bidders having beneficial ownership in countries that share a land border with India will be eligible to bid in public procurement only if they are registered.

The two companies have submitted applications to DPIIT to be registered under the July order.
