India's 26 opposition parties announced Tuesday that they have formed a coalition dubbed "INDIA" to challenge Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in next year's general elections.
In a statement, the coalition said the Bharatiya Janata Party had attacked the republican character and pledged to "defend the ideals of India enshrined in the Constitution".

He said the alliance would focus on tackling inflation and unemployment as a first sign of common political and economic policies.
The naming of the coalition government in India is seen as an attempt to challenge the Bharatiya Janata Party's nationalist plans in the May 2024 elections.

Prime Minister Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party, who have accused coalition members of opportunists and corruption for smearing India around the world, are now trying to save their lives and their families. A month after initial talks to join forces with the BJP began, the multiparty front on Tuesday named itself 'INDIA', or Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance.

Behind the name decided here at the Opposition Conference was the interesting and politically important Jugalbandi between Congress and the Trinamool Congress.

Another significant step was the announcement that the next opposition conference will be held in Mumbai in late August and will be hosted by Shiv Sena (UBT), a relative newcomer to the anti-India Bharat Party sphere under heavy pressure from the Bharatiya Janata Party in Maharashtra.
