At least 64 people were killed and 43 injured in a massive fire in a multi-storey building occupied by migrants in the central business district of South Africa's largest city on Thursday, emergency services said.
According to the authorities, it is unclear what caused the fire in the five-storey building in the city center.
Johannesburg city services spokesman Robert Mulaudzi said firefighters were called to the fire at a building on the corner of Delvers and Alberts streets at around 1:30 a.m.

Dozens of rescue workers are still at the scene as the bodies are retrieved.

"We managed to evacuate the people in the building as soon as we got to the extinguishing operations," Mulaudzi said, adding that most of the injured suffered smoke inhalation or minor injuries.
Mulaudzi said accommodation was provided for those who became homeless as a result of the incident. The fire destroyed the building.
A total of 64 bodies were found in the fire and 43 were injured, Mulaudzi said.

A video posted by Mulaudzi, formerly known as Twitter, showed fire trucks and ambulances outside the building with burned windows.
Among the dead was a small child.
Some of the injured suffered smoke inhalation, some were slightly injured. Mulaudzi said the fire was contained and they were busy with "suppression" and search and rescue operations.

He said the death toll could rise because there was an informal settlement inside the building that could have trapped people trying to escape.
