The Centre on Thursday told the Supreme Court that it is ready for elections in Jammu and Kashmir anytime and now it is up to the Election Commission.
"The central government is now ready for elections at any time. So far, the updating of the voter list has been in progress... which is basically over. Part of that remains to be done by the Election Commission," Attorney General Tushar Mehta told a five-judge constitution bench headed by CJI DY Chandrachud.
“There are three elections coming up. The three-tier panchayati raj system was introduced for the first time. First, there would be elections for panchayat. The Regional Development Council elections have already taken place. Page selections are over. Kargil Hill Development Board elections will be held later this month. Then there would be local elections and then assembly elections," Mehta said, adding, "JandK is a union territory with a legislature."

"It is the duty of the Election Commission of India and the state election commissions to respond to the call - which elections will be held first and how. The update of the electoral roll has been completed. There is a missing part, it is done. processed. It will be completed soon," the ombudsman told the court, which also included Justice SK Kaul, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Justice BR Gavai, and Justice Surya Kant.
