Russian President Vladimir Putin has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to instill confidence in his country's automobile segment.
In a TV interview shared on the website of the Russian president, Putin can be heard encouraging Russians to drive homemade cars.
Alluding to fears of a similar situation in the 1990s, where a lack of Russian-made cars caused the country's self-sufficiency project to fail, Putin said: "In the 1990s, there weren't too many of these (Russian-made ) cars. , but we have these cars available now.. compared to Mercedes and Audi they are a little modest, but they are bought in abundance.
“In this regard, we should learn from many of our partners, namely the Indian partners. Mostly they focus on manufacturing and using cars and ships made in India, and PM Modi is doing right by encouraging people to use brands made in India.

Putin said that Russia has now deployed indigenous vehicles and "we should use them."

"They are sufficient and do not violate any of our WTO obligations. We need to create a certain understanding of who drives which cars and make sure that Russian cars are driven," says the Russian president.
He responded to Russian pressure to drive homemade cars, and the interviewer asked him what was the guarantee that this push for confidence would succeed now, unlike in the 1990s, when it failed.

Russian state officials are asked to drive cars made in Russia, the interviewer says.
