A special court in Pakistan on Tuesday extended the jail term of former prime minister Imran Khan in the Cipher case by another 14 days, reducing the chances of his early release.
Khan, the head of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, was arrested last month after being prosecuted for allegedly violating the Official Secrets Act by disclosing a cable (or encryption) sent by the country's embassy last year. washington in march
This is the third time Khan has been sent to jail. The previous 14-day pre-trial detention ended today.
Special Judge Abual Hasnat Zulqernain presided over the hearings at District Jail Attock, where Khan has been detained since August 5 following his arrest following his conviction in the Toshakhana case. After the hearing, the court remanded him until October 10 to complete the investigation.
The court also continued to return former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi for the same period.
Qureshi was also charged under the same law.
The Islamabad High Court on Monday ordered authorities to transfer Khan to Adiyala Jail in Rawalpindi, but the directive was not implemented.
Previously, the authorities allowed the case to be prosecuted in prison for security reasons.
