Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu tests coronavirus positive days after end of Parliament session

New Delhi, 30-Sep-2020

Days after the monsoon session of Parliament ended, Vice-President of India M Venkaiah Naidu has tested Covid-19 positive on Tuesday. The office of the Vice-President put out a tweet saying that Naidu had undergone a Covid-19 test in the morning and had tested positive for the virus. The 71-year-old Vice-President is asymptomatic as of now and is in good health, the VP Secretariat informed. "The Vice President of India who underwent a routine COVID-19 test today morning has been tested positive. He is, however, asymptomatic and in good health," the Secretariat tweeted. Naidu has been advised home quarantine. His wife Usha Naidu was found to be Covid-19 negative but has gone under self-isolation. Speaking on Venkaiah Naidu's Covid report his daughter Deepa Venkat said, "Thank you, everyone, for your concern and affection. Every other parameter including chest and lung CT are clear and good and asymptomatic. Only by God's grace. The viral load is also very very mild. He has been advised home quarantine and self-isolation." Last week, Naidu had presided over the monsoon session of the Rajya Sabha, which was adjourned sine die on September 23. While the session was initially supposed to end on October 1, it was concluded ahead of time due to the continuing Covid-19 pandemic. Atleast 25 legislators had tested coronavirus positive during the monsoon session which began on September 14. Several Union ministers including Home Minister Amit Shah have tested positive for Covid in the recent past. Minister of State for Railways Suresh Angadi became the first union minister to succumb to the virus.
