Trinamool Congress' Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra has lashed out at Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat, who had criticised women for wearing ripped jeans. Moitra even called the Uttarakhand CM a ‘shameless man’. While speaking at an event, Rawat had on Tuesday said that because of lack of values, youngsters today are following strange fashion trends and think of themselves to be big shots after wearing jeans ripped at the knees. He added that women also follow such trends. The CM added that these days, youngsters go to the market to purchase ripped jeans. If they fail to find one, they cut their jeans using a pair of scissors, added Rawat. Not only this, the newly-appointed CM described the attire of a woman who sat next to him on a flight. He said the woman was wearing jeans ripped at the knees, boots, and several bangles in her hands. Two children were accompanying her. She runs an NGO, has two children, and goes out in society but she wears jeans ripped at the knees. “What values will she impart?” asked Rawat. Responding to Rawat's remark, Moitra tweeted: “CM saab- jabh apko dekha toh upar neeche aagey peechey humein sirf besharm behuda aadmi dikhta hai”. Actor-politician Jaya Bachchan too reacted to Rawat's remarks, saying such statements do not befit a CM. "Those on higher posts must think and make public statements. You say such things in today's times, you will decide who is cultured and who is not based on clothes! It is a bad mindset and encourages crimes against women," said the Samajwadi Party MP. On Wednesday, Uttarakhand Congress chief Pritam Singh described Rawat's remarks as "shameful" and sought his apology. Meanwhile, state Congress spokesperson Garima Dasauni said it doesn't appropriate for a chief minister to make a derogatory remark about someone's sartorial choices. She advised the CM to avoid making such comments.
