Former India opener Virender Sehwag on Tuesday said sportsmen should refrain from meddling in politics, suggesting that those who do so are only there for "ego and hunger for power".
Earlier on Twitter X, he wrote: "I am not interested in politics at all. In the last two elections, he has been approached by both major parties."

"My opinion is that most entertainers or sportsmen should not go into politics because most are there for their ego and hunger for power and hardly spare time for the people; there are few exceptions but mostly most are just doing PR.
"I enjoy being in the cricket and commentating and I don't want to be a part-time MP if that suits."

A cricketer hit out at a man who "thought" Sehwag should have been an MP before Gautam Gambhir.
Sehwag's comment came just a day after his former India and Delhi counterpart Gambhir was at the center of controversy after giving an offensive middle finger to the Pallekele crowd during India's Asia Cup match against Pakistan. In his statement, Gambhir accused some fans of chanting anti-India slogans.

"If you come to watch sports, don't engage in political slogans. When you shout anti-India and anti-Kashmir slogans, you can't expect me to be silent. Social media never gives the full picture," he told reporters on Monday.
As sections of the media covered chants of "Kohli, Kohli" as Gambhir walked off the ground back into the concourse, he made it clear that his reaction had nothing to do with fans chanting "Kohli". "Whatever is shown on social media, there is no truth in it. People show what they want on social media. What actually happened was that anti-India slogans were chanted.

"There were also slogans about Kashmir. So obviously there will be a reaction, one way or the other or we will laugh about it," Gambhir said.
