June 13, 2025: Ahmedabad: Shortly after takeoff on Thursday, an Air India aircraft headed for London crashed in a residential neighborhood of Ahmedabad, killing 241 people on board, according to the company. After being flung off the aircraft, one passenger lived.
According to a medical association officer, the jet struck a college dorm and caught fire, killing at least five medical students.
According to Vidhi Chaudhary, a senior state police officer in the northwest Indian city, "the majority of the remains have been burnt beyond recognition."
Amit Shah, the Indian Home Minister, attested to having visited the hospital with the lone survivor. The survivor was identified as Vishwashkumar Ramesh by a doctor who claimed to have examined him.
"He had numerous injuries throughout his body and was confused," Dr. Dhaval Gameti told The Associated Press. "However, he appears to be safe."
According to another medic, Ramesh informed him that the plane started to fall as soon as it took off and then abruptly split in two, ejecting him before a loud explosion.
Shortly after takeoff, firefighters poured water on the nearby multistory buildings and the smoldering wreckage of the plane, which would have been completely filled with gasoline. Parts of the fuselage were strewn over the scene, and charred bodies were on the ground. Teams from the Indian army were helping civic authorities remove debris and provide medical assistance to those who were hurt.
The jet appeared to be landing as it descended slowly in a social media video. A massive fireball erupted in the sky as soon as it was out of sight behind the rows of houses. By comparing the plane's flight path from the runway with the crash site and the surrounding residential area, the AP was able to confirm the footage.
The aircraft's tail cone, which still had its damaged stabilizer fins connected, was wedged close to the top of one of the buildings at the scene of the crash.
Others might be buried beneath the rubble.
Modi said in a social media post that "my prayers are with everyone impacted" and described the incident as "heartbreaking beyond words."
Vijay Rupani, the former chief minister of Gujarat, was one of the deceased, according to Sambit Patra, a politician from Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.
In a statement published on X, Air India acknowledged that 12 crew members and 229 passengers perished in the collision. An Indian-born British national was the sole survivor. There were 169 Indians, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian on the airplane that was headed for London Gatwick Airport.
According to Divyansh Singh, the Federation of All India Medical Association's vice president, 50 people were hurt and at least five medical college students were killed on the ground. According to Singh, many individuals are "feared buried in the debris," and some of them were in severe condition.
The first Boeing 787 crash
The Aviation Safety Network database indicates that this is the first Boeing 787 Dreamliner crash. According to Boeing, the company was "trying to acquire further information."
The aircraft made a mayday call, indicating an emergency, but failed to reply to the airport traffic control's calls, according to India's aviation regulatory agency.
It looked like the plane had its nose up and was not climbing, which is one of the things investigators would look at, according to aviation consultant John M. Cox, CEO of Safety Operating Systems, who spoke to the AP from Los Angeles.
"Once we acquire that recorder, they will be able to determine relatively quickly what happened since the 787 has very extensive flight data monitoring - the characteristics on the flight data recorder are in the hundreds," he said.
According to the flightradar24 website, since the wide-body, twin-engine aircraft's 2009 launch, over 1,000 have been delivered to dozens of airli
