June 17, 2025: Donald Trump said late on Monday his early departure from the Group of Seven nations summit has "nothing to do with" working on a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, refuting comments by French President Emmanuel Macron who said the US President made a ceasefire proposal.
Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform that Macron "mistakenly said that I left the G7 Summit, in Canada, to go back to DC to work on a 'cease fire' between Israel and Iran," as he left the G7 Summit in Canada to return to Washington. "Wrong! He doesn't know why I'm heading to Washington now, but it has nothing to do with a cease-fire. lot more extensive than that," Trump continued in the post.
Macron said earlier on Monday Trump had made an offer for a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. "There is indeed an offer to meet and exchange. At the G7, Macron told reporters, "A special offer was made to get a ceasefire and then start broader discussions."
Due to the situation in the Middle East, Trump departed the G7 summit in Canada early to return to Washington. In a region that had already been on edge since Israel's military assault on Gaza began in October 2023, the air war between Iran and U.S. ally Israel began on Friday with Israel attacking Iran with air strikes. The two rivals in the Middle East have fought since Israeli strikes on Friday.
Iranian officials say over 220 people have died, most of them civilians, while Israel says 24 civilians have been killed. Israel, the United States, and other Western nations have long attempted to exert pressure on Iran to halt its development of nuclear weapons.
As a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Tehran has stated that it is entitled to develop nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, including enrichment. It is widely believed that Israel is the only Middle Eastern nation with nuclear weapons because it is not a signatory to the NPT.
Trump was still looking for a nuclear deal with Iran, according to Washington.
