June 18, 2025: India has never accepted a third-party mediation on Kashmir and will not accept such mediation in the future, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has told US President Donald Trump.
Vikram Misri, the foreign secretary, said in a video on Wednesday that Modi spoke with Trump over the phone for about 35 minutes. This was Modi's first response to Trump's repeated claims that he had intervened in response to the recent fighting between India and Pakistan. Trump had offered to mediate on Kashmir and claimed to have used trade as a bait to halt hostilities. Misri stated, "Prime Minister Modi made it clear to President Trump that during this entire episode, issues such as the India-US trade deal or the US mediation between India and Pakistan were never discussed at any level." The PM informed Trump that "Operation Sindoor was “paused” following a request from Pakistan and not due to US mediation or offer of a trade deal." “Modi stressed that India has never accepted mediation, does not accept it, and will never accept it. Misri stated, "On the issue, there is complete political unanimity in India." Misri went on to say that Trump comprehended the points made by the PM and expressed support for India's fight against terrorism. Hours before Trump met Pakistan's army chief, Modi and Trump spoke. Modi briefed Trump on Operation Sindoor, saying India had targeted only terrorist hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, and its actions were measured, precise and non-escalatory.
A meeting between Modi and Trump was to take place on the sidelines of the G7 summit. The meeting was canceled because Trump had to return to the United States early. Trump made the call and asked Modi if he could come to the United States on his way back from Canada. Modi cited previous obligations as evidence of his inability.
