Aug 18, 2025: The Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill 2025 was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Monday and referred to a Select Committee. It aims to decriminalise certain minor offenses to make life and business easier. Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal stated in the bill's introduction that the bill aims to improve trust-based governance to make doing business easier. The bill was then sent to the Lok Sabha's Select Committee. By the first day of the next session of Parliament, the committee will have to present its report to the House. The Bill was introduced amid din as Opposition parties protested demanding a discussion on the voter roll revision in Bihar and other issues.

The Lok Sabha's business was put on hold until 2 p.m. while protests continued. This Bill proposes to amend more than 350 provisions. The legislation is part of the government’s efforts to improve the business climate of the country.

The Jan Vishwas (Amendment to Provisions) Act decriminalized 183 provisions in 42 central Acts governed by 19 ministries and departments earlier in 2023. In some provisions, the government eliminated imprisonment and/or fines through the Act. In some rules, the penalties of imprisonment and fine were dropped, while in others, the penalties of imprisonment and fine were changed into penalties.
