An idyllic Austrian village Hallstatt is now facing the grave problem of travellers. Located in Austria, this is also known as the Frozen village after news got around that this is the place that inspired the movie Frozen. The village is an alpine wonderland that truly makes for an astounding travel destination. But now, thanks to social media, and its many influencers, the village is experiencing overcrowding.

The beautiful tiny village is facing issues with a surge in tourist numbers and is finding it hard to cope with the growing numbers. The place first came to the world’s attention after it appeared on a South Korean TV show; later, a Chinese mining tycoon built an exact replica of the village, spending 700 m pounds in Guangdong. Most people traveling all the way to the village come to click a memorable selfie, contributing to the overcrowding in the process.

The Mayor of Hallstatt has had enough of the overcrowding and has said that he is looking forward to making tourism more sustainable. He further mentioned that Hallstatt has a rich cultural history, but it is not a museum. For now, there are plans to create a bus system that would take fewer people in order to thin the crowd. After all, Hallstatt is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is certainly very unique, and delicate. Overtourism could ruin its beauty, and turn it into every other regular destination.

The need to protect important sites and destinations from overcrowding is the need of the hour in these times of social media. Australia recently banned tourists from climbing its sacred rocks, and Italy has made numerous laws to protect its famous sites from getting destroyed by ill-mannered tourists.
