To boost the morale of the youth and to provide the platform to showcase their talent, a proposal for the conduct of Khelo India Winter Games J&K at Gulmarg in March 2020 with the technical support from Winter Games Association of J&K was submitted to the Govt of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports through Administrative Department. A PowerPoint presentation on the proposal was made at New Delhi on 6th February 2020 before the Union Sports Secretary, MYAS.

The proposal involves the participation of 841 Athletes and Officials which includes local participation of 400 Athletes. During the deliberations, it was apprised to the Union Ministry that the purpose of conducting the Winter Games in the UT of J&K is to involve youth in constructive sports activities and to create a sports culture across J&K. The plan was principally agreed by the Union Ministry at a cost of Rs. 2.00 Crores and formal approval are awaited.

Meanwhile the Secretary to Govt. Youth Services & Sports conducted a preliminary meeting at Banquet Hall, Srinagar with the stakeholders and discussed issues connected with the successful conduct of the event. It was also of considered view to conducting a demonstration of other snow sports events viz Rugby, Ice Stock, and Baseball to attract a good impact on the conduct of Khelo India Winter Games. For this purpose associations in the disciplines of Rugby, Ice Stock and Baseball have been directed to provide support for the invitation of the teams and conduct of demonstration matches on the sidelines of the Khelo India Winter Games.

Various committees like Accommodation, Transport, Equipment, Cultural, Press and Publicity, Event Management and Reception have been constituted for the smooth conduct of games. The Games are jointly organizing by J&K Sports Council and Winter Games Association of J&K with the coordination and support from Divisional and District Administration Kashmir, J&K Tourism Department/JKTDC, J&K Cable Car Corporation, High Altitude Warfare School under the aegis of Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sports Authority of India and Indian Olympic Association.

The Inaugural ceremony of the Khelo India Winter Games J&K shall be conducted on 7th March, 2020 at Golf Club and the flag off event ceremony shall be organized at Kongdori, Gulmarg. The games shall be of 04 days duration and teams from various States/UT’s shall report on the 6th of March, 2020.
