All Saints' Day, 2020
October 31, 2020
All Saints' Day, also known as Solemnity of All Saints, is a Christian solemnity celebrated in honour of all the saints known and unknown.
Its intent is to celebrate all the saints, including those who do not or no longer are celebrated individually, either because the number of saints has gotten so great or because they were celebrated in groups, after suffering martyrdom collectively. The feast may have started in the Christian community in Antioch. Its date, 1 November, was set by Pope Gregory III and extended to the whole church by Pope Gregory IV.
Every year on November 1, many Roman Catholics and other Christians around the world observe All Saints Day, which honors all saints of the church that have attained heaven. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, All Saints Day is observed on the first Sunday after Pentecost.
