5th CSI J&K Student Convention organised at MIET

Model Institute of Engineering and Technology (MIET) on Wednesday organized the 5th Computer Society of India (CSI) J&K Student Convention at its Kot Bhalwal campus.

Kashyap Kompella, CEO of Technology Consulting firm rpa2ai Research and Dr. Harshit Kumar, Senior Research Engineer at IBM, India Research were the keynote speakers.

Prof. Ankur Gupta, Director MIET presided over the event. The theme of the convention was “Advances in Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning”. Over 300 students from MIET and other prominent institutions participated in the two-day event, which was sponsored by CSI. MIET operates one of the largest CSI student chapters in North India with over 500 active student members. Prof. Ankur Gupta, Director, MIET welcomed the dignitaries and congratulated the CSE Department for its initiative in organizing the CSI J&K Student Convention which is an annual feature.

Prof. Gupta apprised the audience regarding the innovative projects undertaken by MIET in the domain of Artificial Intelligence. He cited the examples of the autonomous E-Rickshaw under development, deployment of the IoT test-bed, campus-vehicle management system, stampede detection system, traffic rule violation detection system developed by MIET students using AI and deep learning techniques. He encouraged the students to undertake technically challenging projects solving real-world problems.

Kashyap Kompella, Co-author of Amazon Bestseller “Practical Artificial Intelligence” and CEO of rpa2ai Research in his address cited the contributions of Jammu born late Prof. Rajeev Motwani who was a professor of Computer Science at Stanford University and author of renowned books in the field of automata and algorithms. He also mentioned about how Page rank algorithm developed by Larry Page and Sergey Brin (Founders of Google) along with Prof. Motwani brought about a new revolution in the search engine domain.

Kompella spoke about tech startups, the Indian startup ecosystem and how students can go about setting their own startups.
Dr. Harshit Kumar shared his research experience with the students in the field of Artificial intelligence and Deep Learning. He talked about various techniques and algorithms used in Natural Language processing.

He apprised the students with some of the shortcomings of chatbots and motivated the students to develop chatbots and virtual assistants in the education domain. Later students of MIET from the Center for Research, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship (CRIE) demonstrated their innovative projects on AIand RPA (Robotic Process Automation). The projects were deeply appreciated by the industry experts and students. This was followed by a series of events including Codathon, Paper presentation and Poster making competition.

Assoc. Prof. Salim Qureshi, Head, CSE presented the vote of thanks while Mekhla Sharma, AP, CSE compered the event.
