My mask protects you and your mask protects me. Gladly, public at large has understood and accepted this new way of life. Unfortunately, knowledge and awareness regarding safe disposal of masks is lacking and therefore our streets and public areas have started witnessing carelessly tossed masks causing a serious risk of infection transmission and contamination of our environment.

So, here are some recommendations on how to dispose used masks.

CLOTH MASKS: These can be reused after washing properly and air drying by hanging. Hot water (60 degree C) and regular laundry detergent is sufficient. You may also add household bleach as an extra precaution.

SURGICAL MASK/TRIPLE LAYER MASK: Single use recommended. Their functional life is around 6 to 8 hours or till they are soiled or their inner lining gets moist. After the use, be careful not to touch the outer front portion while taking off the mask. Now fold it inwards, so that droplets from mouth and nose are not exposed. Then, wrap it with a tissue paper/newspaper or place it inside a zip-lock or polythene bag and then discard it in a dustbin. Wash hands before and after it.

Intentionally avoiding mentioning re-use/disposal of N95s. Leave them for health care staff please!

Time to practice 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' in a new avtar!
