NEET 2020: Son of a scrap dealer, Arvind Kumar clears medical entrance exam in 9th attempt

A scrap dealer�s son Arvind Kumar, 26, cracked NEET 2020 in his ninth attempt. He is the resident of Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh and has brought glory to his father who went 900 kilometres away from their village to collect just to avoid discrimination to his family. Arvind Kumar whose father is a rag picker was determined to transform his lifestyle and help his family come out of the turmoil they were in. He can do it now once he becomes a doctor, he says. Arvind prepared for the medical entrance exam in Kota and is now preparing for his admission in a medical college. He has scored 620 marks in NEET-2020, his All India rank is 11603. In the OBC category, he stands at 4392nd rank. Arvind's father, Bhikhari Kumar, is a scrap collector. He collects scrap from the streets on his rickshaw and buys junk from people to sell and earn a living. Lalita Devi, his mother, is illiterate and is a housewife. Both of them wished for Arvind to become a doctor. Arvind took admission at Allen Career Institute where he got a scholarship of 75%. In the first attempt, he did not secure a good rank after which he did not lose hope. He studied in a government school in Gorakhpur, commuted almost 8 kilometres every day by bicycle. In the 10th exams, he secured 48 per cent and in the 12th, he scored 60 per cent. When asked about his success he said, " I want to give the credit for my success completely to Kota. If I hadn't come to Kota, I would not have improved myself so much. I was an average student, who secured only 60 per cent marks in 12th standard. And in the 10th standard also, I passed with second division." He also added, "I want to become an Orthopaedic Surgeon after completing my MBBS. I want my family to be respected everywhere. My father was formerly known as a beggar and a scrap collector, now he will be known as the father of a doctor."
