Jadavpur University professor Ambikesh Mahapatra, arrested for forwarding an allegedly defamatory cartoon about Mamata Banerjee and Mukul Roy, was acquitted in the case after 11 years of legal battle. On April 12, 2012, an FIR was filed against him at the East Jadavpur Police Station and he was subsequently arrested. Speaking to India Today TV, Mahapatra said his battle was against all kinds of atrocities. The Alipore District Court asked the lower court to discharge the professor from the criminal case. There was a kind of conspiracy by the Bengal government, the police administration and the ruling party goons to stall any kind of voice against the government. Mahapatra was charged under Section 66A of the Information Technology Act by the state government and sections of the Indian Penal Code.
