People were arrested for disrespecting the National Anthem at a cycling event.

More than a dozen individuals have been apprehended for not standing up during the National Anthem at an event held then in June with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha of J&K in attendance, officers stated on July 6.

Several J&K officials were amongst the 14 individuals mandated to subscribe to “ anticipatory bonds ” ensuing allegations that they had displayed discourteousness to the national anthem by not standing while it was being played at the end of a cycling event in Srinagar on June 25, 2023.

Sources from police had earlier said that 14 people were arrested for disrespecting the National Anthem and a few policemen too suspended—a version later challenged in a tweet by Srinagar Police, which said it had only “bound down” 12 people under sections of Criminal Procedure Code, and not arrested them.

These individuals were “bound down” under the CrPC sections 107 and 151 - these factions grant police the authority to arrest or detain any person. They can also ask him/her to sign a bond in anticipation of a crime. Bound down represents “ allocation of leave ”, or placed under legal discretion which according to sources forced “ anticipant bonds ” from the indicted.

Police expressed in that tweet that a piece of unverified news was circulating about 14 cops being arrested and suspended for disdaining the national anthem. “ It was clarified later that the news is completely false, ” they said.

It’s asserted that several J&K officers were among those indicted for overlooking the National Anthem at the “ Pedal for Peace ” event organized by J&K police. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha was present at the event.
