June, 2025: Elon Musk and President Donald Trump are still at odds, with Trump declaring on Saturday, June 7, 2025, that he has no intention of mending their relationship and that his erstwhile campaign funder and ally could face "severe consequences" if he attempts to support Democrats in the next elections.
In a phone interview with NBC's Kristen Welker, Mr. Trump stated that he has no intention of reconciling with Mr. Musk. Mr. Trump said, "I would guess so, certainly," in response to a particular question about whether he believed his relationship with the multibillionaire CEO of SpaceX and Tesla was gone.
Mr. Trump went on, "I am too busy doing other things." I won a landslide election, you know. I have no intention of communicating to him because I gave him numerous breaks long before this occurred, saved his life during my first administration, and gave him breaks.
Amid rumors that Musk would support Democratic lawmakers and candidates in the 2026 midterm elections, the president also issued a warning.
Mr. Trump told NBC, "If he does, he will have to pay the consequences for it," but he would not specify what those costs might be. Numerous profitable federal contracts are held by Mr. Musk's companies.
Based on the President's most recent remarks, Musk is going from being a close ally to maybe becoming a new target for Mr. Trump, who has actively used his office's authority to punish alleged foes and crack down on critics. Mr. Musk's companies may be especially susceptible to retaliation because they are a significant government contractor. As an easy way to save money, Mr. Trump has already threatened to terminate Mr. Musk's contracts.
Mr. Musk's public criticism of Mr. Trump's "big beautiful bill" that is still pending on Capitol Hill this week marked the beginning of the dramatic break between the president and the richest man in the world. Mr. Musk has referred to the plan as a "disgusting atrocity" and warned that it will raise the federal budget.
In the Oval Office, Mr. Trump criticized Mr. Musk. Soon after, he and Mr. Musk started exchanging acrimonious personal jabs on social media, which caused the White House and Republican lawmakers to scramble to determine the consequences.
As the back-and-forth grew more intense, Mr. Musk stated without proof that the government was hiding information about the President's connection to notorious paedophile Jeffrey Epstein and proposed that Mr. Trump should be impeached. By the morning of Saturday, June 7, 2025, Mr. Musk had removed his posts about Epstein.
In an interview, Vice-President J.D. Vance attempted to minimize the conflict. He termed Mr. Trump an "emotional guy" who was becoming irritated, but he also suggested that Mr. Musk was making a "big mistake" by attacking him.
"I hope Elon rejoins the group at some point. Given how nuclear he has become, perhaps it is no longer feasible," Mr. Vance remarked.
In addition to calling Mr. Musk a "great entrepreneur," Mr. Vance praised the "very good" work of Mr. Musk's Department of Government Efficiency, which aimed to reduce government spending and fired or pushed out thousands of employees.
The remarks were made by Mr. Vance in an interview with comedian Theo Von, who, when opening for Mr. Trump at a military post in Qatar last month, made jokes about the sexuality of guys in the U.S. Navy and taking narcotics off a mixed-race baby.
As Mr. Musk's posts were unfolding on X, the billionaire's social media network, the Vance interview was recorded on Thursday.
In the interview, Mr. Von cited Vice President Elon Musk's assertion that the Trump administration had not made all of the Epstein records public because Mr. Trump is named in them.
In response, Mr. Vance stated, "Definitely not." There was nothing improper that Donald Trump did with Jeffrey Epstein.
In response to another post posted by Mr. Musk, which called for Mr. Trump to be impeached and replaced by Mr. Vance, Mr. Vance stated, "This stuff is just not helpful." It is completely crazy. The president is performing admirably.
Additionally, Mr. Vance defended the plan that has angered Mr. Musk, stating that its main objective was to extend the 2017 tax cuts that were adopted during Mr. Trump's first term, rather than to reduce spending.
The impartial Congressional Budget Office estimates that while the measure would reduce taxes and expenditure, it would also increase deficits by $2.4 trillion over the next ten years and leave an additional 10.9 million people without health insurance.
"The bill is good," Mr. Vance remarked. "The bill is not perfect."
The conversation was recorded in Nashville at a restaurant run by Trump ally Kid Rock.
