Aug 19, 2025: According to the event's organizers, the 72-kilometer Khardung La Challenge and "the pinnacle of endurance racing," the 122-kilometer Silk Route Ultra, will be the grueling ultramarathons at the world's highest AIMS-certified event. A press release stated, "Participants will race across some of the most striking Himalayan scenery, across the high-altitude passes of Khardung La and Nubra, and across Leh and beyond." The Full Marathon (42.195 km), the Half Marathon (21 km), a 11.2 km run, and the "Run Ladakh for Fun" 5 km round out the full schedule. The Silk Route Ultra will begin on September 11 and take runners on a 122-kilometer journey that begins at Kyagar Village at 10,000 feet and ends at Leh Market after crossing the Khardung La at 17,618 feet. "On September 12, nearly 300 athletes will compete in the 72-kilometer Khardung La Challenge, which starts in Khardung Village at 13,000 feet and goes over a pass and into Leh. This ultramarathon is the highest ultramarathon in the world and a true test of human potential because over 60 kilometers of the course are mapped above 13,000 feet. All participants must undergo mandatory acclimatisation, arriving in Ladakh at least seven to ten days prior to their race day to adjust to the high altitude conditions.
"This year's record registrations reflect a newer, fitter India, one that runs toward challenges, not away from them," said Chewang Motup Goba, Chairperson of the High Altitude Sports Foundation and founder and organiser of the Ladakh Marathon. "The Khardung La Challenge and the Silk Route Ultra push the limits of human endurance and conditioning."
