After discovering an ancient crafts village near Varanasi by the research team in Banaras Hindu University (BHU), the Ancient History department of BHU has unearthed a shivlinga dating back 4000 years at Bhabhaniyav village under Varanasi.

This ancient shivlinga was discovered when the team was busy conducting archaeological excavations at Babhniav village, located 18 km from Banaras.

According to the news reports, the BHU professor stated that the unearthed ancient village is about 3500 years old. The professors have made this statement after studying the pottery found here; it belongs to the copper stone period and the Kushan period’s Brahmi script. All these objects have been obtained after surveying in Babhniav village.

The BHU professors say that the 4000-year-old Shivalinga could have been a site of worship in the Gupta period. However, more research is being done to confirm these statements.

Varanasi, being one of the oldest holy cities in the world, has come into the limelight earlier as well with previous discoveries of secret temples and sites. In November 2018, demolitions conducted in residential areas revealed hidden temples that were hardly known to the government officials.
