The pineapple diet has been lurking around our social media feeds like a pendulum. At first, it has a cascading effect and then nothing. But like any diet, the pineapple diet does have its pros and cons. In the 1970s, Danish psychologist and sexologist Sten Hegeler and his wife Inge Hegeler published a book called The Sexy Pineapple Diet, which was originally called Verdens Bedste Slankekur (World's Best Diet). The vintage Danish diet, mentioned in the book, promises a slim body by eating nothing but fresh pineapples on any two days of the week. For the rest of the five days, you can eat anything as long as you maintain a certain body weight. But why sexy? As per the book, the diet not just claims to get a slimmer body but also gives an increased "sexual capacity". According to healthline.com, the author Hegeler admitted the diet doesn't have any scientific evidence, he just simply loved pineapple and thought of creating a diet that involves having large amounts of pineapple. As per WebMD, one cup of fresh pineapple chunks has 82 grams of calories, 0.89 grams of proteins, and 0.20 grams of fat. The Sexy Pineapple Diet further mentioned, in the book, that if you're allergic to pineapples, then alternatives to it are apples, bananas, cantaloupe, pears, figs and even cucumber salad - anything under 500 calories. The point of this mono diet is it doesn't have much evidence of sustainable weight loss. India Today spoke to Dr Amreen Shaikh, Dietitian, Wockhardt Hospital, who called the pineapple diet "just another type of fad diet." "One is allowed to eat only pineapples for two days of the week and for the remaining 5 days one can consume normal food. This will definitely not help in losing weight," Adding that the weight loss a person achieves when following this diet will be "a temporary water loss." "This will happen due to cutting down on calories for those two days. The person following this will gain back the lost weight. This is not at all recommended for the person looking for sustainable weight loss". There aren't any long-term effects of it either. A person could try to follow this diet for a certain period of time, but after a while, the capacity to keep up with it could fizzle out. For a proper weight loss program, a customised diet plan is recommended. "A proper customised diet plan should be followed in order to lose weight and maintain it," underscored Dr Shaikh. In August 2022, nutritionist Lovneet Batra took to Instagram and shared the side-effects of the pineapple diet."Side effects like dizziness, passing out, headaches, hunger pains, insomnia, weakness, and extreme hunger because pineapple contains less than one gram of protein and fat per cup and lacks many vitamins and minerals which can further put you to nutrient deficiencies," Adding that the diet can cause skin rashes, vomiting, dirrhoea and excessive menstrual bleeding.
