The board on Thursday appointed Jaya Verma Sinha as the first woman managing director and chairperson of the Railway Board, the highest decision-making body of the national transporter.
He was recently at the center of a railway media interaction when he, as a Member of operations and Business Development), explained the complex signaling system after the tragic Balasore accident that killed nearly 300 people.

"The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved Jaya Verma Sinha, Member (Operations and Business Development), Indian Railway Management Services (IRMS), Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Railway Board," the order said.
He will start on or after September 1 and his term will run until August 31, 2024.

Sinha is due to retire on October 1, but will be inducted on the same day until the end of the term. He succeeds Anil Kumar Lahoti.
An alumnus of Allahabad University, Sinha joined the Indian Railways in 1988 and served in Northern Railways, S E Railways, and Eastern Railways.
He also worked for four years as a Railway Adviser at the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The Maitree Express from Kolkata to Dhaka was inaugurated during his tenure in Bangladesh. He also served as Railway Manager of Eastern Railway Division of Sealdah Division.
